Petrocaribe Development Fund Supports Jamaica Library Service & Education SectorArticle — January 21, 2016
The PetroCaribe Development Fund (PDF), as part of its commitment to education and the development of human capital in Jamaica, has donated two million dollars (J$2M) to the Jamaica Library Service (JLS).
This donation will assist the JLS in broadening the base of its collections to equip public libraries and libraries within the school system across the island and is intended to further impact the development of a knowledge-based society.
“Our contribution to the Education Sector has been tremendous,” said the CEO of the PDF, Dr. Wesley Hughes, in his remarks at the handing over ceremony of the donation today, January 21, 2016, “Our mission has always included investment in human capital to run concurrently with infrastructural development goals,, and as such we are very pleased to provide this needed assistance.” he said.
In accepting the funds, Director General of the JLS, Mrs. Karen Barton said, “this donation will specifically serve as a boost to the library’s collections as it will significantly help to purchase materials needed for the various public schools and libraries across Jamaica.”
The PDF has, as one of its mandates, the support of the development of human resources in Jamaica and has, since inception provided significant funding for projects aimed at social development and capacity building.
As part of its commitment to human capacity building over the years, the PDF has contributed J$1.07 billion loan to the Student Loan Bureau, J$209 million (US$2.33 million) to the PetroCaribe Development Fund Jamaica 50 Scholarship Awards, J$160 million to the PDF/ JSIF Schools’ Sanitation Project, J$20 million to support the Hope Zoo Preservation and School Educational Project, and the J$7.7M to the Munroe College Windfarm Rehabilitation Project.
